Some 30 teams of Korean students vied for the top spot in a science competition hosted by Hanwha Group on Thursday.
The “Hanwha Science Challenge” contest, which aims to help youngsters develop a wider understanding of energy, bio, climate change and water, was held at the group’s HRD Center in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province.
Under the title of “Saving the Earth,” 30 shortlisted teams presented and exhibited their work. They have been conducting studies on the topic for the past six months, according to a group official.
“I hope that the participants will grow as the world’s renowned scientists who enhance the well-being of humankind by having experience and inspiration through the competition,” Hanwha Chemical CEO Kim Chang-bum said.
The science competition, now in its fifth year, encourages students to conduct in-depth research to strengthen their creativity thinking process.
A total of 914 high schoolers participated in this year’s contest and 7,300 students have over the five years it’s been held, the group said.
According to the company, it is the country’s largest science contest of its kind by the amount of cash prize.
The winning team will receive 40 million won ($33,700) in scholarships. The award ceremony will be held at 63 Square in Yeouido, Seoul, Friday.
