China may be beefing up its military presence near its border with North Korea, South Korean broadcaster KBS reported Saturday.

The report showed footage of a convoy of armored vehicles and trucks passing through the streets of Yanji, Jilin Province in northeastern China.

The news report said that Chinese military units passing through the city center is highly unusual, and that the unusual scene has sparked speculations that Beijing may be strengthening its military presence in preparation for potential conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

Saying that China also increased its military presence in the region in 2013 after the execution of Jang Song-thaek, the husband of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s aunt and once the country‘s second most powerful man, KBS said that Beijing is likely to be preparing for all eventualities.
