A senior U.S. congressman will visit South Korea this week to share views on the alliance between the two countries and the North Korea issue, officials here said Monday.

Rep. Charles Rangel, a Korean War veteran, is scheduled to arrive here on Wednesday for a five-day stay, they said.

He plans to meet with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se next Monday.

"They will discuss ways to strengthen the South Korea-U.S. alliance and bring lasting peace to the Korean Peninsula as well as the implementation of the South Korea-U.S. free trade agreement," a Foreign Ministry official said.

It would provide a chance for reaffirming the U.S. Congress's unswerving support for the alliance, he added.

Rangel, one of the longest-serving members of the House of Representatives, is known for his efforts to improve Seoul-Washington relations and promote peace on the peninsula.

Last month, he introduced a resolution calling for a formal end to the Korean War, which ended in a truce 62 years ago. (Yonhap)
