South Korean steelmakers have been sued by U.S. rivals in the United States on anti-dumping charges, a trade association said Thursday.

U.S. Steel, AK Steel and four other steelmakers filed the anti-dumping suit and countervailing duty penalties against hot-rolled steel plates produced by Korean steelmakers, according to the Korea International Trade Association.

The suit filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission and the Department of Commerce said that the Korean products received diverse government subsidies, which it claimed have hurt their business.

It also called for anti-dumping duties ranging between 86.96 percent and 158.93 percent to be levied on the Korean steel products, KITA said.

South Korea, home to such steelmaking giants as POSCO Co., is the largest exporter of hot-rolled steel plates to the U.S. Last year, it exported a total of 1.2 million tons of the steel products to the country.

The suit didn't specify the names of the companies subject to a probe. They will be known after the Department of Commerce launches its investigation.

Last month, U.S. steelmakers filed a similar suit against cold-rolled steel plates made by Korean companies. (Yonhap)
