The number of visitors to see the “1,600 Pandas+ World Tour” event in southeastern Seoul surpassed 3 million people Tuesday, according to organizers.

Launched May 23 in Korea, the 1,600 Pandas+ Flash Mobs toured 15 scenic spots in seven cities: Seoul, Incheon, Busan, Suwon, Daejeon, Daegu and Gwangju.

The event organized by the Korean chapter of World Wide Fund for Nature is currently taking place around Seokchon Lake and in the gardens of Lotte World Mall in southeastern Seoul, in cooperation with Songpa District Office and Lotte Group.

The organizer said it had decided to extend the event by three more days to close Aug. 2 in response to high interest.

The papier-mache pandas, which came to Seoul on their third stop in Asia following Taipei and Hong Kong, are an art project to raise the awareness of environmental issues by the WWF and French artist Paulo Grangeon, who handcrafted 1,600 pandas -- the number of living pandas left in the wild.

On the sidelines of the event, WWF Korea plans to hold an auction of a series of 14 special-edition papier-mache pandas created in collaboration with Grangeon and two Korean artists.
