Hanwha Q Cells Co., the world's leading solar cell maker, said Tuesday it will form a joint venture to build large-scale solar power plants in India in a bid to expand its presence in the fast-emerging market.

Hanwha Q Cells will join forces with ReNew Power Ventures Pvt., one of India's leading renewable power companies, to build two solar power plants with a total capacity of 148.8 megawatts in the central Indian state of Telangana.

The joint venture will begin construction of the facilities, which are capable of providing electricity for 53,000 households, next month, with the aim to complete it by the end of this year, the Korean firm said.

Separately, Q Cells signed a contract with Adani Group, an Indian energy company, to supply 70-megawatt-capacity modules for a solar farm to be built in Tamil Nadu by February 2016.

India plans to have an installed solar power capacity of 100 gigawatts by 2020 to cut carbon emissions.

Hanwha Q Cells, a renewable energy unit under Hanwha Group, has been stepping up efforts to tap deeper into the global solar market, including the United States and Japan as well as other emerging markets. (Yonhap)
