CJ Korea Express launched a commercial operation on the North Pole route earlier this month, becoming the first Korean cargo deliverer to do so.
The company Monday announced that its cargo vessel KOREX SPB No. 2 left the port of Mussafah in the United Arab Emirates on July 19 for the Yamal Peninsula of Russia. The ship carrying 4,000 tons of offshore terminal facilities will sail the Arabian Sea, Suez Canal, Europe and the North Sea and arrive at the Noviy Port of Russia by the end of August, the company said.
“This is the first commercial operation, not a pilot program, to sail on the North Pole route. We are hoping that this journey will allow our staff to prepare for the era of the North Pole route,” the company said in a press release. CJ said four sailors have received prior education and training about the route and armed security forces are aboard to guard against notorious pirates in the region.
Of the 16,700 kilometers voyage, 500 kilometers will be on the North Pole route, which links Far East Asia and Europe. It is believed to reduce the travel time by 10 days compared to other routes to Europe.
According to market reports, about 40 million tons of bulk cargo is expected to be delivered through the North Pole route by 2021. Currently, Russia and northern European countries dominate the area.
