Incheon Bridge is renowned as one of Incheon’s key landmarks due to its high level of technical complexity as well as its aesthetics and economic value.

Construction began on the Incheon Bridge in July 2005 and finished in October 2009. It cost a total of 2.45 trillion won ($2.21 billion) with 823 billion won in private funding and 1.63 trillion won in government funding.

Incheon Bridge boasts a high level of safety as it was constructed to withstand earthquakes of up to magnitude-7.0 and other natural disasters such as strong winds and spring tides.

The bridge was constructed as an 800-meter-long cable-stayed bridge in order to ensure a safe passageway for ships, and has collision-prevention structures around the pier to provide pier safety.

The bridge’s lighting is also a sight to see at night. The bridge is illuminated in five different colors each in 30-second intervals, and changes colors based on seasons, national holidays and celebratory days.

Its structural design and unique night lighting makes the bridge an international landmark and creates an image of a futuristic city for Incheon. The lighting on the bridge has helped it become a major tourist attraction.

Incheon Bridge also has much economic value due to its convenience. The bridge adds to Incheon International Airport’s status as a world-class airport as it shortened the distance it takes to reach the Seoul Metropolitan area by almost 20 kilometers, saving around 40 minutes of transit time.

Calculating the cost, the bridge saves around 480 billion won in distribution costs each year as well as 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and 3.9 billion won in air pollution cleanup per year.

Incheon Bridge also contributed to developing the Incheon Free Economic Zone, as it helped vitalize the local economy around the Songdo International City and Yeongjong areas and bring in foreign investment.

Due to these qualities, Incheon Bridge has received over 120 awards from both Korean and overseas organizations.

In its report in 2005, British construction news site Construction News mentioned the bridge as one of the Top 10 Architectural Wonders of the World. It was also selected as one of the nine sights in Incheon to see during the Incheon Asian Games 2014 last September in a public poll.
