Ban to visit Gaeseong on Thursday

[1] U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday that he will visit the North Korean border town of Gaeseong on Thursday to encourage North Korean workers there in a surprise announcement that came amid growing uncertainty over inter-Korean ties.

[2] “I would like to announce that I will visit Gaeseong Industrial Complex on May 21. I believe it is a win-win model for both Koreas,” he said at a news conference held at the World Education Forum in the South Korean western port city of In-cheon.

[3] Ban visited the inter-Korean joint venture town in 2006 as the South Korean foreign minister. But it will be his first visit to the North Korean town since he be-came the U.N. chief in 2007. He is also the first U.N. secretary-general to visit the North Korean territory in 22 years, he explained.

2. 2030 청년백수 12년만에 최고치

20s, 30s joblessness hits 12-year high

[1] The number of unemployed Koreans in their 20s and 30s who have no previ-ous job experience has reached the highest level in more than 12 years, data showed Tuesday.

*unemployed: 실직 중인 (=out of work, jobless)

[2] According to Statistics Korea, the number of totally jobless individuals aged between 20 and 39 came to about 95,000 as of April. As those who had been pre-viously hired were excluded from the tally, the number of collective young jobless people is estimated to far surpass that figure.

[3] Those unemployed in their 20s and 30s with no prior experience numbered 89,000 and 6,000, respectively. The figure of 95,000 was the highest in 147 months after having peaked at 97,000 in January 2003.

[4] The increase in the young generation’s unemployment rate could be regarded as a policy failure, as the government was seeking to pull up the youth employ-ment rate to the average of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and De-velopment.
