South Korean chipmaker SK hynix Inc. saw its global ranking move up a notch to become the world's fourth-largest player in the segment in 2014, data showed Wednesday.

SK hynix saw its revenue reach US$16.1 billion last year, outpacing Micron Technology by $3 million, the data compiled by IHS Technology showed, narrowing its gap with its three bigger rivals: Intel Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. and Qualcomm Inc.

Intel took the top spot with sales of $49.9 billion, followed by Samsung Electronics with $38 billion and Qualcomm with $19.2 billion.

Although SK hynix already stands as the No. 2 player in the dynamic random access memory (DRAM) sector, it marks the first time for the company to place in the fourth spot in the overall chip industry.

SK hynix's improved presence came as it saw sales advance 25.8 percent on-year in 2014, while those of Micron Technology edged up 14.1 percent. Those of Intel, Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm moved up 6.3 percent, 14.9 percent and 12.1 percent, respectively.

Industry tracker IC Insights Inc., meanwhile, said Micron still maintained its lead against SK hynix in 2014 but added the South Korean firm will beat the U.S. player in 2015. (Yonhap)
