South Korea's foreign minister plans to meet with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi later this week to discuss the issue of Japan's wartime sex slavery and other bilateral issues, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se plans to meet with a 10-member delegation from the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday, according to the ministry.

The delegation is due to arrive in Seoul on Wednesday for a three-way visit as part of their trip to five Asian nations, which also includes stops in Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Japan, it added.

"The minister plans to explain Seoul's efforts to improve its relationship with Japan," Noh Kwang-il, spokesman at the foreign ministry, told a press briefing. "Yun plans to stress that it is critical for Japanese political leaders to have the right understanding of history for better ties."

A Seoul official said the visit by the U.S. lawmakers would serve as a chance to lead the U.S. Congress to better understand the issue of Japan's wartime sex slaves.

Pelosi was the speaker when the House of Representatives adopted a landmark 2007 resolution on Japan's wartime sexual slavery that called on Tokyo to formally acknowledge, apologize and accept historical responsibility for the atrocity.

Seoul's foreign minister will also discuss pending bilateral issues including negotiations on a Seoul-Washington nuclear cooperation accord and a U.S.-led regional free trade deal, known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), said Noh. (Yonhap)
