Food-and-culture enterprise CJ Group on Thursday established CJ Breeding, a seed company, in order to improve domestic farm products.

The company will focus on the research and development of the seeds of rice, beans, mung beans, red pepper, Chinese cabbage, sesame, seaweeds and others, and will provide the outcomes to farms. The farmers will sell back the harvested products to CJ CheilJedang, which will be manufactured into processed foods for sales, the company spokesman said.

CJ plans to secure seven additional kinds of improved seeds in the next three years and advance into the $85 billion global seed market. “This year, we will run four farms across the nation to harvest 90 tons of rice and 200 tons of mung beans to start with,” said CJ Breeding CEO Kim Cheol-ha.

“CJ Group chairman Lee Jae-hyun has constantly stressed the importance of agriculture and having our own seeds. The establishment of CJ Breeding is to nurture and globalize what we have,” a CJ CheilJedang spokesman said.

CJ CheilJedang invested 1 billion won ($908 million) in the establishment of CJ Breeding.
