Six out of 10 traffic accidents involving children occur within 300 meters of an elementary school, with kids younger than 7 years old being the most vulnerable to accidents, a report showed Monday.

According to the report compiled by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, more accidents occurred after school, from 2 to 7 p.m., than before. Also, children were more likely to become involved in traffic incidents during the spring semester, particularly in May. Cases involving 7-year-olds made up 13.2 percent of the cases analyzed.

The findings were part of a report that inspected some 140 billion data points related to traffic accidents, weather, and dangerous driving behaviors to determine the necessary steps in revising traffic laws and policies.

To tackle the high number of accidents near schools, the Seoul government said it would strengthen traffic safety measures such as building speed bumps around the 50 elementary schools that have the most accidents, and increasing traffic safety education for young students in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.

The report also included studies on traffic accidents involving senior citizens, drunken driving and jaywalking near bus stops.

Senior citizens were most likely to be involved in traffic accidents around traditional markets or parks. Jaywalking incidents were five times more likely to occur around bus stations located on bus-only lanes than around regular bus stations on the side of the road.

Seoul began utilizing the big data analysis to help frame its transportation policies in 2013. Last year, it expanded the use of big data to other areas like welfare and safety. The city government plans to expand the fields to transportation safety, culture and tourism, and energy by 2017, officials said.
