A northeastern Chinese province bordering both North Korea and Russia has been pushing to build what it calls an international tourism destination in one of its border towns, China's state media reported Friday, citing a senior Chinese official.

The Chinese province of Jilin set up a task force to establish its border town of Fangchuan, near a North Korean river that forms the border with China and Russia, as a "Trans-border Tourism Zone," Jin Chunshan, mayor of Hunchun city in Jilin province told the website of People's Daily, the mouthpiece of China's ruling Communist Party.

The North's 512-kilometer-long Tumen River serves as the boundary between China and Russia.

Jin said the proposed tour zone will be jointly built by North Korea and Russia, showing the three countries' "very active" stance over the proposal. Details of the proposal are sketchy, but Jin said the project is aimed at "jointly gaining profits by sharing tourism resources among the three countries."

The Chinese province plans to launch a feasibility study for the proposal this year, Jin said. (Yonhap)
