South Korea's foreign minister plans to visit Germany this week to discuss ways to promote cooperation over North Korea's nuclear issue and Seoul's initiative for unification, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se will leave for Berlin on Thursday and hold talks with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday, according to the foreign ministry.

"The two sides will discuss North Korea's nuclear issue and how to cooperate over Seoul's unification initiative," the foreign ministry said in a statement. "They will also deal with global security issues, as well as other topics, such as Ebola and violent terrorism."

Yun's four-day visit comes as this year marks the 70th anniversary of inter-Korean division, as well as the 25th anniversary of Germany's unification.

South Korea and Germany also plan to hold a second round of an advisory panel on unification, meant to help Seoul learn the lessons from the European country's reunification. The two countries launched their first advisory panel in late October last year.

In March 2014, South Korean President Park Geun-hye unveiled her unification proposal, known as "the Dresden Declaration," which calls for Seoul to increase humanitarian assistance to North Korea and build infrastructure in the North if trust increases between the two sides.

North Korea angrily rejected the proposal, denouncing it as an attempt to absorb the communist country.

The foreign ministry said Yun will also fly to Munich to have bilateral talks with his counterparts from countries that will attend a security conference to be held in the German city from Friday to Sunday.

Seoul has not revealed the name of the countries, saying that it is in the process of setting the schedules.

This year's Munich Security Conference is expected to mainly deal with the collapse of the international order, security challenge and the fight against terrorism, according to its organizers.

Vice Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul will attend the conference as Seoul's delegate, where he will speak about South Korea's unification policy, it added. (Yonhap)
