Ssangyong Motor CEO Lee Yoo-il on Wednesday expressed his desire to resign before March, after leading Korea’s third largest carmaker for six years.

“I have already told Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra that I won’t be able to serve another term. The talks have been underway for more than two years,” Lee told reporters at the media test-driving event for the company’s new SUV Tivoli in Yeouido, Seoul. Mahindra acquired Ssangyong in 2010 and the Indian automaker’s chairman visited Seoul earlier this month to mark the launch of Tivoli, the first new car under the Mahindra regime.

“I think this is the right time for me to let go of this heavy burden as a CEO now that Tivoli has made quite a successful debut. I want to make way for a younger person to lead the company which is going through a critical stage,” the 70-year-old said. Lee said he plans to step down before the shareholders’ meeting scheduled in March.

Lee, a motor specialist with 30 years of industry experience at Hyundai Motor Group, was appointed as the joint legal administrator of Ssangyong Motors in February 2009 when it was going through a workout process. He was appointed as CEO by Mahindra in 2011.
