Hyundai Asan, a Hyundai Group affiliate, has opened its second duty-free shop in a joint industrial complex in the North’s border town of Gaeseong, the company said Wednesday.

The South Korean operator of inter-Korean business projects held an opening event for the 130-square-meter duty-free shop in the Gaeseong industrial park, where the company has the exclusive right to run the factory complex.

“The commodities at the shop will vary from high-quality goods to practical ones,” a Hyundai Asan official said.

The shop will offer products manufactured in South Korea including electronics products, cosmetics and other luxury items. The target customers are local residents, foreigners and buyers who visit the industrial park, Hyundai Asan said.

In 2009, the company launched its first duty-free store in the same factory zone.

It has also been running a duty-free shop at Onjeonggak Rest Area on Mount Geumgangsan on the North’s east coast since 1999.

According to Hyundai Asan, production at the joint factory park has normalized after operations were suspended for over five months in 2013 amid high tensions between the two Koreas.

The Gaeseong industrial park, established in 2004, is the last remaining symbol of inter-Korean reconciliation and cooperation.
