The United States has imposed sanctions on a North Korean firm as well as entities from China, Iran and other nations for involvement in proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the State Department said.

The North's Ryongaksan General Trading Corp. was on the list of entities and individuals slapped with sanctions under the Iran, North Korea, and Syria Nonproliferation Act, according to a State Department notice to the Federal Register.

The notice, dated Tuesday, did not provide further details, including what the North Korean firm specifically did. But the company has been suspected of providing assistance to the communist nation's exports of ballistic missiles.

Under the measure, U.S. government agencies are banned from dealings with the sanctioned entities. However, sanctions on the North Korean firm would only be symbolic because it is not believed to have any dealings with U.S. government agencies.

The sanctions list also included one individual and two companies from China, four Russian companies, five Sudanese companies, four agencies and one company from Syria and one Venezuelan company. (Yonhap)
