South Korea reported an additional case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) Sunday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to six since the first case was reported earlier in the month.

The new case was confirmed at two pig farms in Cheongju, 137 kilometers south of Seoul in North Chungcheong Province, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

FMD is a viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals, such as cows, sheep and deer.

As of Sunday, 22,638 animals from 20 affected farms have been slaughtered, according to the ministry.

So far, the FMD outbreak has been limited to central South and North Chungcheong provinces. The fresh outbreak of FMD was first reported at a pig farm in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province, on Dec. 3. (Yonhap)
