The number of construction permits for new homes here surged over 22 percent on-year last month, the government said Tuesday, on an apparent recovery of the property market in the capital region.

The number of new home permits issued in November came to 49,181 in November, up 22.2 percent from the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Such an increase follows a series of government measures to revamp the local property market, which had long been mired in a slump.

In August, the government eased regulations on the property market such as the loan-to-value ratio and the debt-to-income ratio, both aimed at widening public access to home mortgages.

In October, the number of home transactions also climbed to an eight-year high of 108,721, the ministry said earlier.

By region, the number of new home permits issued in the Seoul metropolitan area, which includes the western port city of Incheon and Gyeonggi Province, spiked 84.3 percent on-year to 26,349.

However, new home permits issued in rural areas came to 22,832, marking a 12.1 percent on-year plunge.

Reflecting an apparent recovery in the real estate market, the number of groundbreakings for housing construction also surged 17.6 percent on-year to 57,064 in November, the ministry said. (Yonhap)
