Two police officers were arrested Tuesday on charges of leaking a presidential document alleging a former close aide to President Park Geun-hye meddled in state affairs although he held no official position in the incumbent government, prosecutors said.

Jeong Yun-hoe, who served as an adviser for Park when she was a lawmaker, is alleged to have held regular meetings with several senior presidential officials and sought to collaborate with them to replace Chief of Staff Kim Ki-choon, according to the confidential document leaked to the media.

Dismissing the document dated Jan. 6 as nothing but a collection of groundless rumors, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae has asked the prosecution to look into the case. An investigation is under way to verify the contents of the document written early this year.

The Seoul Central Prosecutors' Office probing the case said it arrested the two incumbent police officers, including a lieutenant surnamed Choi, at their homes for further questioning.

Prosecutors suspect that the two copied the document, drawn up by Park Kwan-cheon, a senior police officer, and leaked it to the media in February.

Park, the 48-year-old police superintendent, had worked for the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae until early February, when he was transferred to a police station in northern Seoul.

Jeong, a key adviser during Park's term in parliament, will also appear before prosecutors to face questioning on Wednesday.

The allegations over Jeong's behind-the-scenes intervention in state affairs have emerged as a nation-rocking political scandal, putting the Park administration on the hot seat as it enters its third year in power in late February. (Yonhap)
