Jin Air Co., the budget unit of Korean Air, said Monday that it has taken delivery of its first B777-200ER passenger jet that will open new horizons for the company and help improve customer service.

The move marks the first time that a local low-cost carrier has incorporated a wide-body, long-range jet into its fleet.

The B777-200ER can seat up to 355 people, compared to the 160-190 people that can be hauled by smaller aircraft in service with local LCCs. South Korea’s five budget carriers employ a mix of B737-800s, A320s and A321s to ferry passengers relatively short distances.

The wholly owned affiliate of South Korea’s largest full-service carrier said the latest addition to its fleet will be used on the Incheon-Guam route starting Dec. 12, after conducting last minute checks.

It said of the total number of seats, 36 will be so-called Jini Plus Seats that are 6-inches longer to offer better leg room.

“The new plane will be used to increase the total number of seats available for Jin Air customers, as the company explores expanding into long-range flight services starting next year,” Jin Air said. It said every effort will be made to ensure that people will be able to go on affordable, long-distance trips using Jin Air.
