Samsung Electronics Co.'s smartphone brand Galaxy was named South Korea's most valuable brand for the fourth straight year, a survey showed Sunday.

Brandstock, a South Korean market research firm that determines rankings of the top 100 local brands, said in its latest survey that the Galaxy name retained the top spot for 2014, by getting a brand index reading of 936 points, out of a possible 1,000 points.

The world's largest smartphone suffered setbacks in sales and earnings this year, mainly due to disappointing sales of mobile phones, yet it still remained the most valued brand in the country.

The Galaxy is followed by discount store chain E-Mart that got 922 points, with Brandstock Top Index (BSTI) showing South Korea's most popular messaging app, KakaoTalk, placing third.

Besides Galaxy, E-Mart and KakaoTalk, Incheon International Airport, the country's main air hub, Lotte Department Store, Korean Air, Lotte World Adventure amusement park, Shinhan Card, Chamisul soju and Shin Ramyun instant noodles all made the top 10 list.

In contrast KB Kookmin Bank, plunged from third to 13 this year, with KT's flagship brand olleh sliding from fifth to 17th. (Yonhap)
