AmorePacific Group chairman Suh Kyung-bae has been appointed vice chairman of the Seoul Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the chamber said on Wednesday.

“With the appointment, we expect him to show leadership in strengthening the competitive edge of the Korean economy and industry,” the SCCI said in a press release.

Some 90 board members reached a unanimous decision, naming Suh the new vice chairman at a meeting held in Seoul.

“Suh will be a great help to domestic business circles for those who seek to enter overseas markets as he has rich experience and intuition (as seen through his success) in globalizing his brand,” said Lee Dong-geun, the KCCI executive vice chairman.

The chamber also pointed out that he is fostering the development of the cosmetic industry here and overseas with his innovative business management.

Since Suh was appointed chief executive of Taepyeongyang, now AmorePacific Group, in 1997, he has pushed the company to expand its global reach.

His recent appointment follows in the footsteps of his father Suh Sung-hwan, the founder of the cosmetics-maker, who served as the SCCI vice president from 1982 to 1988.

The SCCI is an affiliated body of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the nation’s largest private economic organization, which has a total of 71 regional chambers and approximately 135,000 members from all parts of the Korean economy.
