North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited a military food factory, highlighting the importance of modernizing food production, the country's official news agency said Monday.

Kim gave field guidance to the Combined Foodstuff-processing Factory Under the Korean People's Army (KPA) Unit 534, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, referring to the military unit in charge of military supply, presumed to be based in the capital of Pyongyang.

As is customary, the KCNA did not release the date of the visit.

The latest visit follows Kim's reported trip to another military food factory last week.

In the upgraded factory, the leader toured foodstuff, maize-processing and rice-polishing shops, and highlighted the importance of increasing production as well as modernizing food-making processes, according to the KCNA.

"The modernization of all processes ranging from cereals and other things' feeding to forwarding of goods made it possible to remarkably increase the production of foodstuff and improve its quality while saving manpower and worksites have become germ- and dust-free to fully ensure hygienic safety of products," Kim was quoted as saying.

Kim also urged efforts to increase military supply, saying, "This year became a year for consolidating the foundation of supply bases for the service personnel as the supply bases of the KPA, including this factory, have been updated."

The KCNA said Hwang Pyong-so, the military's top political officer, and First Vice Minister of the People's Armed Forces So Hong-chan accompanied Kim on the field guidance. (Yonhap)
