A 49-year-old businessman has been arrested on charges of illegally securing classified documents about the country's next-generation submarine project, prosectors said Friday.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said the head of a South Korean-German defense company, surnamed Park, received the documents from an executive of another defense contractor, surnamed Kim, at unspecified dates.

Kim is currently standing trial over allegations that between 2008 and June this year he collected military secrets on an estimated 31 national defense advancement projects.

Kim divulged them to 25 companies in and out of the country, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said they are investigating whether more documents have been leaked, and have banned the head of the South Korean firm for which Kim has worked since the mid-2000s from leaving the country.

Six other military officials have been indicted in connection with the case.(Yonhap)
