Fire at Hankook Tire not expected to disrupt normal production

The fire that broke out at Hankook Tire Co.'s Daejeon plant is not expected to disrupt production since the damage is mostly to its warehouse, the company said Wednesday.
South Korea's largest tiremaker said a fifth of the warehouse, located some 160 kilometers south of Seoul, was lost in the inferno along with some 180,000 tires. The warehouse held products destined for both domestic and overseas markets.
"The production line has not been damaged in any way and workers have reported to work today," a corporate source stressed.
The local fire department estimated that the fire began at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday, with the blaze only being extinguished Wednesday morning. It speculated that the total cost of the damage caused may reach 6.6 billion won (US$6.2 million), although Hankook said it needs more time to assess the scene.
Firefighters and the company are trying to determine what triggered the fire.
The company said that while the fire broke out after most of the employees left the plant, the quick response of emergency response teams and the fire department limited serious environmental fallout.
"Oil fences were set up immediately to prevent contaminants flowing into sewers, while water used to put out the fire has been collected for treatment," the company said.
The company said its plants in Daejeon and nearby Geumsan can produce some 48 million tires per year. The company with three production plants in China, and factories in Hungary and Indonesia, aims to produce 95 million tires this year(Yonhap).
