Nongshim, the nation’s top instant noodle and snack maker, is expanding its bottled mineral water business under the vision to advance into a global food and beverage manufacturer.

The foodmaker debuted mineral water brand Baeksansu in 2012 after its decade-long research and development effort.

“We nurtured the brand in the pursuit of a driving force for future growth,” the company said in a press release.

Following the launch of the water brand, Nongshim has established a distribution network at home and abroad for a new business. Based on the continued efforts to build retail channels at home, the market share of Baeksansu jumped to 5 percent of market share in the first half of this year, the company said.

The company is pushing to expand its water business overseas, particularly in China.

With the belief that Mount Baekdusan, a volcanic mountain on the border between North Korea and China, is a source for the world’s best water quality, the company built a factory 3.7 kilometers from the source and connected an underground pipe to receive uncontaminated, clean water without damaging the surrounding forestry.

The mountain has a unique geological structure, where porous basalt was formed through volcanic activity and now functions as an excellent natural water filter.

As a result, Baeksansu, manufactured using water from the mountain, is acknowledged by experts for its rich mineral content. It has the highest concentration ratio of magnesium and calcium, the essential minerals that affect the taste of water.

“Nongshim’s Baeksansu boasts of the world’s highest level of minerals that are beneficial to the human body,” a company official said.

The company broke ground on the second production line for Baeksansu near a village close to the mountain with a 200 billion won ($190 million) investment.

“We will spur market penetration into overseas markets, particularly in China, when the production line is completed. We are confident that the new factory will be our new source of income for the next 100 years,” said company CEO Park Jun.
