영국 남성 필딩이 침대에 누워 책을 읽는 동안 나방이 그의 귀에 들어가 나오지 않았다. 필딩은 나방을 제거하려고 했지만 빼내려는 과정에서 실수로 더 안쪽으로 밀어 넣었다.
나방이 움직일 때마다 소름이 끼쳤다고 필딩이 전했다. 3일이 지나가 그의 아내가 그를 결국 병원으로 데려갔다. 간호사들은 그의 귀에 나방이 있다는 소리를 듣고 경악했으나 병원 측에서 10분 소요되는 수술로 나방을 제거할 수 있다고 했다.
하지만 10분으로 예상됐던 수술은 한 시간 반만에 끝났다. 외이도를 열어 포셉으로 나방을 제거했다.
“고막 주변에서 모든 일이 벌어졌기 때문에 수술 과정은 매우 고통스러웠다.”라고 필딩이 한 매체와의 인터뷰에서 밝혔다.
죽은 나방은 필딩 가족 벽난로 위에 전시된 상태다.

A living moth was found in a man’s ear and removed three days later still alive, according to the Daily Mail.
Rob Fielding, who lives in England, was lying on his bed reading when a moth flew inside his ear. Fielding tried to remove the insect but accidentally pushed it farther into his ear canal.
Fielding said in the report that “every time the insect moved it made him twitch.” After three days his wife finally sent him to the doctor. The nurses were shocked to hear that the moth was still alive in his ear. But the hospital stated that the insect could be removed through a 10-minute operation
However, the operation ended up being an hour and a half long. Doctors had to open the ear canal and use forceps to remove the insect.
“The operation was very painful because it took place next to my eardrum.” said Fielding.
The moth is currently displayed on the Fieldings’ mantel.
