WASHINGTON (Yonhap) ― U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has picked Rexon Ryu, a former White House nonproliferation official with close personal ties to him, as his new chief of staff, according to a news report Wednesday.

Ryu, 41, a Korean American, was named to succeed Mark Lippert as Hagel’s top staffer, Foreign Policy magazine reported. Lippert has been awaiting Senate approval of his nomination as new U.S. ambassador to South Korea.

Ryu is scheduled to begin work at the Pentagon later this week, the report said.

The Pentagon declined comment on the report.

A former State Department official, Ryu worked for Hagel when the defense chief was a senator. In picking Ryu, Hagel chose “someone with whom he has a close bond over someone with deep Pentagon experience,” Foreign Policy said.

Ryu also served as a deputy to the U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations and a nonproliferation official at the National Security Council at the White House.
