박근혜 대통령은 10일 “공과대학이 창조경제의 전진기지로 탈바꿈해야 한다”며 공과대학 개혁의 필요성을 강조했다.
박 대통령은 이날 오전 청와대에서 제8차 국가과학기술자문회의를 주재한 자리에서 “창조경제는 결국 사람에 달려있다. 미국의 실리콘밸리가 성공한 것은 주변에 위치한 우수한 공과대가 큰 힘이 됐다”며 이같이 밝혔다.
박 대통령은 “이제 창조경제 패러다임에 맞게 공과대도 변해야 한다”면서 “국내 100대 기업 최고경영자 중 이공계 출신이 20년만에 상공-사회계를 앞질렀고 ‘이공계 프리미엄’이란 신조어도 나왔는데 정말 바람직한 변화라 생각한다”고 밝혔다.
그러면서 “이런걸 놓치지 말고 공과대도 변해야 한다. 실용적 교육과 연구를 강화해 기업 현장에서 필요한 인재를 양성하고 연구개발 결과가 실험실에 머물지 않고 사업화와 신시장 개척으로 이어지도록 해야 한다”고 말했다.
박 대통령은 이공계출신으로 서강대학교 전자공학과에서 학사를 받았다
박 대통령은 공대 교육이 산업현장과 연계되어 연구 결과가 곧 산업화되고 더 나아가 신시장 개척으로 이어질 수 있도록 산-학-연의 협조를 당부했다.
이어 “현재 대입 수험생 중에 이공계 진학 희망자는 과거보다 적고 창조경제 핵심인 소프트웨어 학과는 정원미달 사태를 빚고 있다”며 “공대 교육이 산업 현장과 괴리된 이론 중심으로 가면서 기업이 필요한 산업 인재를 양성하지 못한다는 지적도 있다”고 덧붙였다.
이에 윤창번 청와대 미래전략수석은 기자들과 만나 “공대혁신 방안에 대해서 미래부 산업부 교육부가 공동 작업을 해서 방안을 만들고 함께 작업 할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

President Park Geun-hye on Thursday urged local engineering universities to launch sweeping reforms to nurture better talent and develop the new technologies required to lead her vision of creative economy.
“I hope that engineering universities can transform themselves into advanced bases for the creative economy. A creative economy, after all, depends on people,” Park said during a meeting of the presidential advisory panel on science and technology.
Park’s mantra of creative economy is aimed at integrating the ICT sector with other industries. Park believes that the new vision would help enhance national competitiveness and create new markets.
To boost the vision, Park stressed that engineering universities should step up efforts to produce new technologies that have high commercial potential rather than focusing on lab research. Park herself majored in electronics engineering at Sogang University in Seoul.
“Behind the success of Silicon Valley in the U.S., there was an excellent engineering college near by. (I was told that) the engineering college (there) became an incubator for start-up companies and venture firms in Silicon Valley,” she said.
“(Our engineering universities) should also step up efforts to provide practical courses and intensify research to produce the better talent needed for the businesses, and to commercialize research results and develop new markets,” she added.
