아르헨티나의 수도 부에노스아이레스에서 10년간 실종됐다고 믿었던 여인이 자연적 건조로 인해 미라가 된 상태로 발견되어 당국 여론에게 충격을 안겨주어 화제가 되고 있다.
마리아 크리스티나 폰타나는 사망 당시 51세였을 것이며 1990년에 동맥류 수술 합병증으로 인해 사망한 것으로 추정된다고 검시관이 AFP에 전했다. 자연 건조로 인해 보존된 피부조직세포 덕분에 사망시점과 사망원인을 알아낼 수 있었다고 해당 관계자들이 말했다.
수사자료에 따르면, 폰타나는 약물치료를 받고 있었으며 장애가 있었다고 한다. 그녀의 집은 여러가정이 밀집해 사는 허름한 연립주택이었지만 이웃들은 “악취가 나지 않았을 뿐만 아니라 아무도 [폰타나의] 사망신고를 하지 않았다”고 TN방송에 경악할 만한 사실을 알렸다.
빈집인줄 알고 재산권을 주장하려 폰타나의 집을 찾은 한 이웃 마르셀라 칼베트가 미라로 변한 사체를 발견하고 신고한 것이라고 한다.
이같이 자연건조로 인한 시체의 ‘미라화’는 1월에도 보도된바 있다. 부에노스아이레스의 한 남성은 어머니의 사체를 천에 싼 채 주방의자에 앉혀 놓았다. 10년이 넘게 미라가 된 어머니와 함께 살던 이 남성은 집에서 사망한 채 발견되었다. 남성이 사망한지 한 달 만에 고약한 악취를 맡은 이웃들의 신고로 인해 발견되었다고 한다.
자연 미라화는 부에노스아이레스처럼 온도가 높고 건조한 기후에서 종종 발생하는 현상이다.

Missing woman found as a mummy after a decade
A woman who had been missing for more than 10 years was found at her home in Buenos Aires as a naturally mummified body, police told AFP on Friday.
Maria Cristina Fontana is believed to have died of complications from an aneurysm that had been operated on in 1990, the coroner’s office said. Skin tissue was preserved by drying allowing the authorities to determine the time and cause of death. The authorities suggested that she was about 51 at the time of her death.
According to forensic data, Fontana was on medication and disabled, living in the lower unit of a house split into apartments with separate entrances. However, the neighbors told TN television that there was no foul smell around the apartment and nobody ever reported her death.
One of the neighbors, Marcela Calvete, found the body as she entered the apartment, believing it was uninhabited and intending to claim property rights by vacancy.
In January another mummified corpse was found in Buenos Aires. A man lived with the corpse of his mother, which was wrapped in a sheet and sitting on a chair in the kitchen of their home. He had been living with the corpse for a decade and was found a month after his death.
The process of natural mummification can occur in hot, dry climates like that of Buenos Aires.
