머리 다쳤다가.. '이젠 나도 천재'

예술적 재능이 거의 없던 한 여성이 계단에서 떨어져 머리를 다친 후 미술 재능이 폭증하는 기이한 현상이 벌어졌다.

영국 현지 언론에 따르면 핍 테일러(49)는 학창 시절 예술학교 교사에게 "미술에 재능이 없다"는 혹평을 들었으나, 2012년 5월 계단에서 굴러 전치 6개월의 두부 손상을 입었다.

회복기간 중 집에서 요양하던 테일러는 심심풀이 삼아 연필로 그림을 그리기 시작했고, 전과 달리 훌륭한 정밀묘사 작품들을 척척 그려내는 자신을 발견했다.

이같은 놀라운 변화에 대해 테일러는 "전과는 비교도 될 수 없게 자연스럽게 작품이 그려내는 나를 발견했다"며 "사물을 관찰하는 시각이 전과 완전히 달라진 것을 느꼈다"고 현지 언론과의 인터뷰에서 말했다.

테일러가 다치기 전과 후에 그린 그림들을 비교해본 네티즌들도 놀라워 하며 "나도 머리 다쳐볼까", "정말 아름다운 그림이다", "인류는 생각보다 큰 잠재적 재능을 가진 것 같다" 등의 댓글을 달았다.

한편, 데일리메일은 전세계적으로 소수의 사람들이 테일러와 같은 "후천적 석학 증후군 (acquired savant syndrome)," 혹은 후천적 서번트 증후군을 통해 음악, 미술, 수학 등에 뛰어난 재질을 얻은 바 있다고 전했다.

An artistically challenged woman woke up a talented artist after she fell down the stairs and injured her head, British media outlets reported Tuesday.

Pip Taylor, 49, is reportedly among a handful of people around the world who have obtained an unusual gift through a mysterious biological mechanism called “acquired savant syndrome,” the Daily Mail report.

Taylor reportedly tripped from the stairs in May 2012, causing serious bruising to her brain. At the hospital, she was told that her injury needed six months to heal.

While recovering at home, Taylor began drawing to pass the time, long after her art school teacher dissuaded her from the career by pointing out that she lacked artistic talent, the Express reported.

But after the injury, she suddenly felt empowered with a mysterious gift -- and began producing pencil-drawing “masterpieces,” the paper added.

“It felt really natural in a way it hadn’t before and I saw things in a different light … I began to realize I had a real skill in being able to copy things accurately,” she was quoted as saying.
