미 전역을 뒤흔들고 있는 "유타 주 정자 바꿔치기 사건"이 보도된 후 유타대학교 의과대에 총 17건의 정자 재확인 관련 문의전화가 접수됐다고 AP통신이 15일 보도했다.
문제의 정자 바꿔치기가 일어난 시점과 비슷한 때 인공수정을 시도한 부부들의 불안이 문제의 정자은행과 협업중이던 유타대로 향한 것이다.
이 기막힌 사건의 발단은 미국 텍사스 거주중인 파멜라 브라넘이 20년 전 인공수정으로 낳은 딸이 남편이 아닌 정자은행 직원의 정자로 태어났다는 사실을 알게된 순간이었다.
파멜라는 최근 자신을 포함한 세 가족의 유전자 검사를 했다가 20살 딸 애니의 유전자가 자신의 남편인 존의 유전자와 거의 일치하지 않는다는 것을 발견했다고 CBS가 14일 보도했다.
미국 텍사스에 전문가의 도움을 받아 파멜라는 마침내 자신이 1991년 인공 수정으로 딸을 낳았을 당시 병원에 근무했던 직원 토머스 레이 리퍼트가 딸의 생물학적 아버지임을 밝혀냈다.
그러나 이 병원이 1992년 문을 닫았고 리퍼트는 1999년 사망했다. 특히 리퍼트가 납치 범죄로 유죄 평결을 받은 적이 있는 전과자인데다 악의적으로 근무 도중 인공 수정을 하러 온 여성 환자의 난자에 일부러 자신의 정자를 투입한 정황이 드러나면서 파문이 확산됐다.
이에 대해 리퍼트의 아내 진 리퍼트는 "내 생각에는 한번이 아니라 여러 번 그런 짓을 했을 것"이라고 미 언론에 밝혔다.
파멜라는 "그렇게 리퍼트의 정자로 인공수정된 아이가 100명도 넘지 않겠느냐"며 당시 병원 측이 시술 과정에서 관리가 태만했던 탓이라고 주장했다.
해당 진료원은 문을 닫았기 때문에 미국의 비난 여론은 당시 이 병원과 결연 관계를 맺고 의료 시설과 의료진을 일부 공유했던 유타대학교 (University of Utah) 의과대를 향했다.
특히 이 대학에는 비난의 화살은 물론 '내 자식도 리퍼트의 씨로 태어난 것 아니냐' 는 은밀한 문의 전화가 빗발쳤다.
유타대 의과대 대변인 케이시 윌레츠는 "안타깝지만 우리도 뭐가 어떻게 된 것인지 파악할 도리가 없다"면서 "브라넘 가족에 벌어진 불행한 사건에 대해 유감스럽게 생각하고 위로의 말을 전한다"고만 밝혔다.
병원 등 의료 시설을 관리•감독하는 미국 연방 식품의약국이나 유타 주 정부 보건국, 그리고 검찰 등에도 비난 전화가 몰렸다. 그러나 주 정부와 연방 검찰 역시 "너무 오래된 일이라 수사를 벌일 수 있을지 모르겠다"며 당혹해했다.
한편 아버지 존은 딸이 친혈육이 아니라는 사실을 알게 됐음에도 "이번 일로 딸과 더 가까워졌다", "딸을 사랑한다. 애니는 언제나 내 딸"이라고 강조하는 모습이 언론을 통해 보도되며 미 전역에 감동을 선사했다.

The University of Utah hotline has recently received a total of 17 calls from the people who feared that their sperms samples may have been switched, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

“Everything that I thought that I was,” she said, “I wasn’t.”
Her father John suspected the fertility clinic that arranged for the Branums’ in-vitro fertilization could have mistakenly switched his sperm specimen with other customers’.
With the help of genetic genealogist CeCe Moore, the Branums discovered the shocking fact that the sperm used in the surrogacy belonged to now-deceased fertility clinic worker, Thomas Ray Lippert, who had used his own sperm instead of John’s.
After the truth was revealed, John Branum vowed that the recent sperm mix-up scandal only strengthened the family’s bond, CBS reported.
“I think Annie and I are closer than we’ve ever been,” John Branum said in an interview with broadcaster CBS on Tuesday. “I love Annie. She’s my daughter.”
