아내이자 배우로 활약하고 있는 한혜진이 토크쇼에서 기성용 (25•선더랜드)을 위해 남긴 영상편지가 주목을 받고 있다.
지난 9일 오후 포털사이트 네이버에서 생중계로 영화 ‘남자가 사랑할 때’(한동욱 감독, 사나이픽처스 제작) 라이브 토크쇼에서 MC를 맡은 김제동이 한혜진에게 “사랑하는 남자(기성용)에게 한마디 해달라”라고 부탁했다.
한혜진은 쑥스러워했지만 이내 “너무나 미안하고 고맙고 사랑해”라고 말해 부러움을 샀다.
이에 보답하듯 기성용은 12일(한국시각) 영국 런던의 크레이븐 코티지에서 열린 풀럼과의 잉글랜드 프로축구 프리미어리그 원정경기에서 현란한 활약으로 선더랜드의 4-0 승리를 이끈 주역이 되었다.
그의 정확한 볼 테크닉은 팀 공격의 디딤돌이 되었고 이로 인해 상대는 긴장된 게임에 임할 수 밖에 없었다.
이날 기성용이 진가를 발휘한 핵심은 1-0으로 앞선 전반 41분 애덤 존슨의 땅볼 프리킥을 상대가 밀집한 페널티 박스 안에서 논스톱으로 꺾어 차 넣어 번개같은 골을 작렬시킨 부분이다. 밀집 수비가 촘촘히 서 있었지만 워낙 순간적으로 90도 꺾인 번개 슈팅에 그물망 수비도 공을 제지시키지 못했다.
기성용이 프리미어리그에 진출한 후 얻은 첫 필드골이기도 했다.
이어 2-1로 앞선 후반 24분 자기 진영 왼쪽 미드필드에서 공을 받은 기성용을 빠른 공격을 나서며 동료와 한 번 주고 받은 뒤 풀럼의 아크 정면으로 침투한 후 수비와 수비 사이로 킬패스 존슨에게 완벽한 골찬스를 만들었고 이어 존슨은 골로 어시스트에 보답했다.
프리미어리그 주관 방송사인 ‘스카이스포츠’는 양 팀 선수를 통틀어 기성용에게 존슨에 이어 두 번째로 높은 평점 8을 부여했다.
스카이스포츠는 “기성용이 첫 필드골을 터뜨린 데 이어 후반에 존슨에게 정확한패스를 전달해 역습의 모범 사례를 보여줬다”고 평가했다. 기성용의 발끝에서 시작된 선더랜드의 세 번째 골은 이날 경기의 최고 골(골 오브 더 매치)로 뽑혔다.

Actress Han Hye-jin cheers for Ki Sung-yeung
Sunderland rejoiced over the 4-1 victory against Fulham on Saturday aided by Adam Johnson and Ki Sung-yeung, lifting Sunderland off the bottom of the Premier League.
Sunderland dominated throughout the first half of the match after Adam Johnson scored an opening goal. Johnson then set up Korean player Ki Sung-yueng to fire home his first open-play Premier League goal. The 24-year-old midfielder Ki scored for the Black Cats in the 41st minute at Craven Cottage while Steve Sidwell made the host’s only goal in the 52nd.
Ki returned the favor to Johnson to score again in the second half of the match, converting a penalty kick five minutes from the end. SkySports described Ki’s pass as “an inch-perfect ball into the path of Johnson after a classic counterattack.”
The team recorded a second victory for the week, prevailing upon the first leg of the Capital One Cup semifinal against Manchester. Sunderland now scores 17 points from 21 games and slightly moved up its place ahead of Crystal Palace as of Saturday.
Meanwhile, Ki is also garnering the attention of Korean fans after his wife, the actress Han Hye-jin mentioned him on a live talk show for her upcoming film “When a Man Loves a Woman.”
“I’m so sorry but I thank you and love you,” Han said when asked to say a few words to her husband in the U.K.
The newly-wed couple tied the knot on July 1 and the actress continues with her acting career while Ki is running on the soccer field abroad.
