A village in Indang in the province of Cavite, Philippines, was named after the Korean city of Gangneung.
Gangneung Mayor Choi Myeong-hee, Gangneung City Council chairman Kim Hwa-mook and other officials from the east coast city attended an event Saturday to name the newly created Indang village “Pine City Gangneung,” city officials said.
The village was formed under a Habitat housing project led by Gangneung-based volunteer group SCU.
SCU has built a village of 23 houses to accommodate 43 households in Indang since 2003. Currently, about 250 residents live there. A total of 167 volunteers, including 25 Gangneung citizens, have participated in the project.
In gratitude, the municipality of Indang has named the village “Pine City Gangneung” and held a naming ceremony.
Gangneung uses pine trees as its brand for tourism as the city is rich with the trees.
Indang is a city of 62,000 people in the southern part of Cavite, about 55 kilometers southwest of Manila.
