Canada’s saskatoon berries made their debut here on Tuesday to make Korea the first market in Asia to get a taste of the so-called superfruit.

“We are pleased to have this opportunity to have Korea learn about this wonderful fruit. I think Korean people, with their focus on a healthy lifestyle and a keen interest in quality products, will make Korea a great test bed for introducing saskatoon berries to the region,” said Sandra Purdy, president of Prairie Berries, the operator of the world’s largest saskatoon berry orchard and supplier of the berries to Korea.

Saskatoon berries predominantly grow in the Canadian prairie provinces. In appearance, they strongly resemble blueberries, but they tend to have tougher skin and a darker purple tone.

The most significant trait of saskatoon berries is that they are high in antioxidants, substances claimed by some to help fight against diseases and slow the aging process.

Recent studies led by the Saskatoon Berry Council of Canada and POS Bio-Sciences showed that the saskatoon berry possesses higher levels of antioxidants and even more fiber than the blueberry and the acai berry.

“Called ‘Canada’s hidden treasure,’ the saskatoon berry has been found to contain high levels of antioxidants and are rich in vitamins and minerals, in addition to fiber, which help maintain healthy glucose levels,” said Lauren Yoo, the Korea representative of Prairie Berries.

Saskatoon berries are also quite versatile, she added, as they can be served as jam, syrup, juice and even chocolate desserts, and be enjoyed in diverse ways, according to the representative.

Yoo is also the head of AgriVogue Consulting, an international trading, consulting and marketing firm specializing in agriculture and food industries.
