South Korea's finance minister called for lawmakers on Wednesday to accelerate their efforts to pass pending bills initiated by the government to boost the overall economy.

"Over the past eight months, the government has worked hard to boost the economy and strengthen its fundamentals but such efforts have not resulted in helping how people actually feel (in their lives)," Finance Minister Hyun Oh-seok told a meeting with other policymakers here.

"This is blamed much on uncertain economic situations at home and abroad but another reason is that the move to pass the bills that the government has come up with has not been fast enough for them to be executed in the field," he added.

He cited about 100 bills pending in the National Assembly, many of which are intended to boost job creation, carry out key government agendas and other programs to bolster the overall economic activity.

Hyun, who concurrently serves as deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs, said that the government, for its part, will keep working hard to make it possible for people to feel the impact of its measures and polices.

"We also sincerely urge the National Assembly to work hard to pass those pending bills as quickly as possible," he added. (Yonhap News)
