“하버드대 출신 의사라더니…” 알고보니 중졸 무직

미국 하버드대 의대 출신 의사를 사칭, 여성으로부터 거액을 뜯어낸 중졸 무직 남성이 경찰에 붙잡혔다.

서울지방경찰청 국제범죄수사대는 학력ㆍ직업을 속이고 만난 여성으로부터 5000만원을 뜯어낸 혐의(사기)로 A(31) 씨를 검거했다고 17일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 A 씨는 2011년 5월부터 2년여간 하버드대 의대를 졸업한 국내 대학병원 성형외과 전문의로 행세하며 피해여성 B 씨에게 접근해 생활비 등 5000만원을 가로채고 캠코더 등 금품을 훔친 혐의를 받고 있다.

A 씨는 2007년부터 미니홈피, 미국 유학생 친목모임 사이트 등에 거짓으로 자신을 소개하는 영문의 글을 작성해 올리며 의사 등과 친분을 쌓았고, 미니홈피 지인의 소개로 피해자 B 씨를 소개 받았다.

그는 국내 재벌가 3세들과의 친분이 있는 것처럼 행세하고 “미국 시민권자이니 결혼 후 미국으로 가자”며 B 씨를 속여 친척 결혼식 축의금 등 명목으로 돈을 뜯어냈다.

하지만 경찰에 따르면 A 씨는 중학교를 졸업한 ‘백수’였을 뿐 미국은 커녕 해외로 출국한 사실조차 없었다.

조사 결과 A 씨는 하버드 의대 마크가 부착된 의사 가운과 대학교수 보직이 적힌 가짜 명함을 제작해 주변 사람들을 속여 왔다. 또 특진차 들렀다며 모 대학병원 로비에서 찍은 사진을 미니홈피에 올리는 식으로 의심을 피해 왔다.

특히 A 씨는 중졸의 학력에도 전문 의학서적을 독학으로 공부해 전문용어를 익혔으며, 실제 의사들과 대화를 나누기에 문제가 없을 정도였다고 경찰은 전했다. 심지어 A 씨는 일부 의사들과 함께 지방 의료봉사활동을 다녀오는 등 대담함을 보이기도 했다.

하지만 이런 사기 행각은 B 씨와 미국으로 출국하기로 약속한 날짜를 며칠 앞두고 A 씨가 갑자기 잠적하면서 꼬리가 잡혔다. 경찰은 B 씨의 신고를 받고 지방을 전전하던 A 씨를 붙잡았다.

경찰 관계자는 “A 씨의 휴대전화에 저장된 여성들의 연락처 등을 토대로 추가 피해자가 더 있을 것으로 보고 수사를 확대할 예정”이라고 밝혔다. (김기훈 기자)

Fake doctor cons woman for cash, valuables

A man suspected of pretending to be a doctor and scamming a woman into giving him money and valuables was arrested, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said Tuesday.

The 31-year-old suspect surnamed Seo allegedly tricked an unnamed female victim into believing that he was a doctor who graduated from Harvard Medical School. He is believed to have received allowances and various items which totaled 50 million won ($46,000).

Seo, who is a middle school graduate with no regular job, started decorating his website in 2007 as though he was a Harvard graduate. He also made a fake business card and doctor’s gowns carrying the symbol of Harvard University.

Seo joined a club of Korean students who studied in the United States, and even worked as a medical volunteer with doctors he met at the club. In 2011, he was introduced to the victim by another club member.

The suspect and the woman grew close to one another and had vowed to visit the U.S. together. Days before departure, Seo went off the radar.

The victim grew suspicious and alerted the police, who booked Seo in cooperation with provincial police officials.

“Seo had no other job besides pretending to be a doctor,” police said, adding that investigators are looking to see if there are any other victims.
