Two construction workers were killed and one injured when part of the support structure for a new access ramp on Seoul’s Banghwa Bridge was dislodged on Tuesday.

According to the authorities, the box girder for an access ramp became dislodged and knocked over construction equipment at 1:08 p.m., killing two workers and injuring another.

One of the bodies was recovered immediately, and work was underway to recover the second as of Tuesday afternoon.

The workers who were killed have been identified as Choi Chang-hee and Huh Dong-gil, respectively 52 and 50 years old.

The injured man has been identified as Kim Kyung-tae, 60. He was transported to a hospital in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. All three individuals are Chinese nationals.

Four construction workers were present at the site at the time of the accident, but the fourth was unharmed.

The Seoul city government was set to hold a response meeting following on-site inspection by Mayor Park Won-soon to draw up follow-up measures.

“As the scene of the accident has not been processed, follow-up measures will be drawn up once (the situation) has been addressed,” Park said at the site of the accident. He also said that the authorities would focus on recovering the remaining body for the time being.

Located in western Seoul, the Banghwa Bridge links southwestern parts of the capital to Goyang on the north side of the Hangang River.

The works are being carried out as part of a project connecting existing roads in the southwestern parts of Seoul to the riverside expressway on the northern bank of the Hangang River.

The work, which is scheduled to be completed next year, is being overseen by Seoul City’s infrastructure department.

This is the second construction accident with multiple fatalities to occur in Seoul this month.

On July 15, seven workers were killed when the construction site for an underground reservoir was flooded.
