Prosecutors target revenge attacks on crime victims

The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office said Sunday it had prepared measures to curb rising retaliatory crimes in the country.
The number of offenders who attacked their original victim again for reporting them reached 243 last year, a nearly twofold increase from 132 in 2011.
A prosecutors’ survey found that 76 percent of the retaliatory offenses took place in the early stages of investigation or immediately after the suspect was released after questioning.
The prosecution said that from now on, victims would be notified of the release of the offender and offered protection where needed.
Harsher punishment will be slapped on repeat offenders, by applying the maximum penalties contained in sentencing guidelines.
To better protect victims exposed to danger, an emergency beeper will be provided and a hotline installed between the victim or witness and the prosecutors’ office.
To protect the identity of victims and witnesses, the prosecution will promote the use of aliases in documents and have an investigator accompany them when appearing in court.
When needed, moving expenses or a safe house will be provided.
There are currently nine safe houses operated by the prosecution nationwide, and an emergency beeper has been distributed to about 900 people in the past year.
