The nation’s top steelmaker POSCO is to expand its scholarship program this year and hire 200 university students during their school years, officials said Sunday.

Since 2009, the company has selected 100 sophomores every year and offered them scholarships until they graduate and join POSCO as regular employees.

From this year, POSCO doubled the number to 200 and expanded the system to its subsidiaries ― POSCO Engineering & Construction, POSCO Energy and Daewoo International.

“The POSCO scholarship holders in past years have proven themselves competent, both in academics and in business practices,” said an official.

“The system not only contributes to reducing youth unemployment in society but also to boosting the general work efficiency of the company.”

The selected students, in exchange for the scholarship and employment favors, must take designated classes at school, in addition to POSCO’s e-learning courses.

They also take field training courses at the company’s manufacturing sites in Pohang or Gwangyang during their vacation period, or visit overseas markets during semesters.
