Samsung Electronics will open its Innovation Forum on Thursday where the global tech giant will show off its technology prowess.

“We (Samsung) have been growing to the point where we should light the way in the market like a lighthouse,” said Kim Nam-yong, a vice president of Samsung Electronics’ Corporate Management Office at a media event the day before the opening of the Samsung Innovation Forum.

The self-assessment was also reflected at a closed-door event, held earlier this month, in which executives, researchers and employees compared Samsung products against competitors and held a discussion session.

The world’s largest electronics firm has held the behind-the-scenes meeting every year since 1993.

The name of the meeting used to be “Comparison Between Samsung’s Products and Advanced Ones,” but the name was changed this year to “Comparison Between Samsung’s products and Competitors.”

“In the past, we held the meeting to learn advanced technology, but nowadays we see the technological gap between (advanced) Samsung and other market players,” said the vice president.

“We now have to lead the market instead of being a runner up,” he added.

The world tech giant is running the forum until July 9 to show the public its technological breakthroughs over the past 20 years at R5, its mobile research center located in Suwon.

The annual event will exhibit Samsung’s electronic gadgets and home appliances including SH-870, the first-generation analogue mobile phone released in 1995, and the Myungpum Plus One, a TV model which caught consumers’ attention with its unique catchphrase, “find the hidden inch.”

The latest smartphones and TVs will be also be displayed to show technological development.

“People will able to see the history of Samsung’s innovation at this forum. Please, keep an eye on the changes in people’s lives with the innovative technology of Samsung,” said Lee Kyeong-tae, a vice president at the corporate management office and leader of the strategic planning group.
