South Korea on Monday opened a call center to help local businesses better utilize the country’s free trade agreements.

The FTA Call Center can be reached by dialing 1380, and will provide country or region-specific information on how local firms can benefit from the country’s FTAs, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

South Korea is already enforcing nine bilateral and multilateral FTAs with 46 countries, including the United States and members of the European Union.

There are about 153,000 local companies directly or indirectly exporting their products to countries with which South Korea has a free trade deal.

However, many of them, especially some 67,000 companies such as small and medium-sized firms that export their goods indirectly through larger firms, have little experience or information on how the FTAs can further benefit them, the ministry said.

“The FTA Call Center is expected to work as a catalyst for our firms to quickly adapt to the changed environment under FTAs while also working as a kind guide for our small- and medium-sized firms that are currently facing difficulties,” it said in a press release. (Yonhap News)
