A panel of foreign envoys and experts chaired by ASEAN-Korea Secretary General Chung Hae-moon, discussed how the Southeast Asian regional organization serves as a driving force for broader regional integration during a working session of this year’s Jeju Forum.
“ASEAN Plus Three and the East Asian Summit are two major vehicles driving cooperation and integration toward our shared goal of an East Asian community,” said Moon by phone on Friday from the forum.
The working session, titled “East Asian Regional Integration with ASEAN as the Driving Force,” also looked at talks for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) which very recently concluded its first round of negotiations.
The RCEP could become the world’s largest free trade area ― an integrated market of 16 countries and 3 billion people with a combined GDP of about $17 trillion, or about 28 percent of the world’s economy.
The panel included Singaporean Ambassador to Korea Peter Tan, Indian Ambassador to Korea Vishnu Prakash and Indonesian Ambassador to Korea John A. Prasetio, as well as Michael Yeoh, CEO of Asian Strategy & Leadership in Malaysia.
They concluded that the multitude of partnerships that puzzle piece nations and regions in Asia together will complement and reinforce each other to contribute to an overall positive integration process.
