A self-proclaimed hacker and kitchenware salesman from New Zealand won a North Korean amateur golf title earlier this week.

Peter Clarke, a 29-year-old man from West Auckland, started playing golf last November and joined this year’s tournament in Pyongyang through a Britain-based travel agency called Lupine Travels, which offers travel packages to unusual destinations, according to news reports.

The People’s Democratic Republic of Korea’s third amateur golf tournament was held last week at Pyongyang Golf Course, a 7,041-meter par-72 course, which opened in 1994 under the guidance of late leader Kim Jong-il. According to a legend, Kim once finished the 18-hole course in just 34 strokes.

This year’s tournament originally had 30 golfers to tee off, but due to increased security risks on the peninsula, all but six dropped out at the last minute, according to the event organizers from Lupine Travels.

“To be honest, I didn’t think I’d win,” said Clarke. And when asked about whether he would return next year to defend his title, Clarke said, “I’d have to think about it. It’s not cheap.”

It is estimated that the self-proclaimed hacker spent about $5,000 to participate in this year’s tournament.
