A female Army officer was found dead on Friday with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, military officials said, noting investigations are underway to find the exact cause of the incident.

The 30-year-old Army captain, surnamed Hong, was found dead inside her car by her colleagues at 8:10 a.m. in her unit in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, with a gunshot wound in the neck, a senior Army official said, asking customary anonymity.

A K-1 rifle and its bullet shell were found inside the car that was locked up, and there was no trace of infiltration from outside, the officer said. No suicide note has been found yet.

"As the deceased didn't attend the meeting in the morning, military officers went out to find her and discovered her," the official said. "We are currently looking into the cause of the incident."

As there were no traces of infiltration into the car, military officials say they don't exclude the possibility of her committing suicide.

Investigations are also currently underway how the officer was able to take the firearm and the bullet outside of her unit, officials said. (Yonhap News)
