Renowned Korean artist Kim Chang-yeol, famous for his water drop paintings, has pledged to give his major works and documents that show his artistic practice to Jeju, according to Jeju Special Self-Governing Province officials.

His donation includes 200 works that represent major periods between 1957 and 2013 and documents, photographs, painting tools and more. The collection is estimated to be worth 15 billion won ($13 million) to 20 billion won.

The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province signed an agreement on Monday with Kim and said they would set up a new museum devoted to Kim’s works and life.

“I was told that Kim considers Jeju as his second hometown and I am glad we meet again after 60 years,” Jeju Gov. Woo Keun-min said.

Kim, born in 1929 in South Pyeongan Province in today’s North Korea, stayed in Jeju for 18 months during the Korean War.

“Jeju is a place where the calligrapher Kim Jeong-hee left his legacy and where the genius painter Lee Joong-seop stayed and worked for a while. I feel honored to have signed the agreement for the establishment of my museum,” said Kim.

Construction of the 9 billion won museum will begin next year.
