The U.S. special envoy for North Korean human rights will visit Seoul early next week for a four-day trip that includes talks with South Korean officials, a diplomatic source said Wednesday.

Ambassador Robert King will arrive in Seoul on Sunday and meet with officials of the foreign ministry and other government agencies related to the North’s human rights issues, the source said on condition of anonymity.

It will be King’s first visit to South Korea this year. “Ambassador King is scheduled to arrive in Seoul on May 19,” the source said on the condition of anonymity.

King and South Korean officials are also expected to discuss the issue of a Korean-American man detained in North Korea, according to the source.

The 44-year-old Kenneth Bae, detained by North Korean authorities late last year, was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly attempting to overthrow the North’s government. (Yonhap News)
