Charity expat-Korean music event CLASH is holding its anniversary show on April 27 in aid of single mothers.

The show, proceeds from which will go to Korea Unwed Mothers and Families Association, will be preceded by a “Mini-CLASH” warm-up show on April 20.

CLASH events run four times a year, each supporting one of four charities.

KUMFA is the first charity the event supported. It advocates for the rights of unwed pregnant women and mothers, and runs Heater, a shelter that houses and feeds up to 24 mothers and their children, free of charge.

“There’s a lot of prejudice in Korea against single mothers and they have difficulty generating an income, and so the funds that we raise go toward helping them and helping the children,” said Jane Park, a co-organizer of the event.

The headlining performer of the main event is Vasco. Park said they were pleased to have him not only because he was well-known in Korean hip-hop, but also because of his enthusiasm for the aims of KUMFA.

“When he found out it was for single mothers he was extra interested, because he is also a single parent and he appreciated the cause,” she said.

Other performers include rock cover band Bluesnake, British MC Jake Pains, who also hosts a show on music channel Mnet, and rock act JerseyBrother. Joe Rollins and Todd Davis will provide extra support. A raffle and donation boxes will also be there to raise funds.

The Mini-CLASH for the event will be partly fund-raising and partly to build interest for the main CLASH event the following week.

Park said the event would mix party and performance and explained that it was particularly important to them that the anniversary show was successful.

“If this anniversary CLASH is successful we have the potential to become a registered nonprofit, and then we can get corporate support, so we want to make it really big and have a lot of people come out,” she said.

The Mini-CLASH event will feature performances of rap, R&B and acoustic music from 13 different artists and a raffle with a guaranteed prize draw. The group will sell tickets for 5,000 won and each ticket will win a prize worth between 5,000 won and 500,000 won, including Furby toys, tickets to a DJ DOC concert and gift certificates to Tattoo Korea.

CLASH starts 10 p.m. at DGBD in Hongdae, with tickets 10,000 won in advance or 15,000 won at the door. Bookings can be made by emailing clash.twoworlds@gmail.com.

Mini CLASH starts at 9 p.m. at Bar Americano in Itaewon. Entry is voluntary donations before 10 p.m. and 5,000 won afterward.
